Celebrate Wimbledon fortnight with the perfect outdoor party

For many the highlight of the British summer is watching the Wimbledon tennis tournament, which will be taking place at All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club from 3rd – 16th July. Here’s all you need to know about the prestigious sporting event, which in 2017 is celebrating its 140th year, as well as tips as to how you can join in the celebrations with your family and friends at home..

When do the important matches take place?

The Ladies’ Singles final and both the Men’s and Ladies’ Doubles final are both held on the Saturday 15th July. The Men’s Singles final and the Mixed Doubles final will be held on the final day.

Who are the top seeds?

Britain's defending champion Andy Murray has been named top seed in the Men's tennis rankings for the tournament. Novak Djokovic is second, Roger Federer third and Rafael Nadal is fourth seed. It is the first time since Wimbledon 2014 that these four players have been named top seeds for a Grand Slam and consequently keeps them apart until the semi-finals. German Angelique Kerber is the top Ladies’ seed with Britain's Johanna Konta sixth. Two-time defending Singles champion Serena Williams will not return to defend her title due to her pregnancy.

How do I get tickets?

Most tickets for the Championships are applied for in advance via a Public Ballot. It is still possible to buy some tickets on the day though, including the top courts – Centre, No 1 and No 2. You can also buy Ground Passes which give you access to the Wimbledon grounds and the infamous Murray Mount, where you can watch the action on the big screen. You just need to be prepared to queue – often overnight - but that’s all part of the experience.

Join in the fun at home

However, the BBC has been broadcasting from the tournament for the past 90 years – radio, TV and online - so why not enjoy with family, friends or colleagues and hold your own Wimbledon-themed party. A pop up gazebo is the ideal garden accessory, even when the rain can stop play!

Decorate your gazebo with the Wimbledon colours of green and purple – balloons, bunting and table decorations - if you have any old tennis balls that are no longer being used, put these into vases to make tennis-themed centrepieces. Cover your party table with a green cloth, adding court lines with masking tape and securing with tablecloth clips so it doesn’t blow away. You could also add soft-furnished seating to bring the indoors outside, making the space more intimate, relaxed and create an informal atmosphere.

Lay on strawberries and cream – a top Wimbledon favourite - jugs of Pimm’s and the traditional Robinsons Barley water, cucumber sandwiches and cakes. For some great picnic feasts to celebrate the British tennis tournament visit the BBC Good Food website.

Ask your guests to wear white or dress as their favourite Wimbledon tennis player, an umpire, ball boy or girl. And don’t forget to organise your own tennis tournament with a trophy for the winner. For when rain does unfortunately stop play, prepare a Wimbledon quiz.

Finally, when the sun begins to set and lights go down, a gazebo heater will provide immediate heat to keep you and your guests warm and globe lighting will help you to continue the party late into the night.

Why not check out how to style your gazebo for other parties and gatherings. At TFH Gazebos we sell a wide range of gazebos, pop-up marquees and accessories. Get in contact today or browse our stock for more information.
